Brew Review – Sly Fox Royal Weiss

Sly Fox Royal Weiss ReviewBrewery: Sly Fox Beer
Brew: Royal Weiss
Style: Wheat Beer
ABV: 5.6%
IBUs: 11

Price: $9.99 (64 oz growler)
Their Take: An unforgettable Bavarian style Wheat Beer brewed with German Pils and Wheat malts and hopped with German Northern Brewer hops. This beer is unfiltered and served in a traditional wheat beer glass at our pubs. Medium bodied, tan in color, fruity.

My Thoughts
Sly Fox’s Royal Weiss pours a nice golden color, and is cloudy as you would expect a wheat beer to be. It was a decent wheat beer, but for me had a bit too much of the fruity ester flavors to me. I couldn’t really pick up on a defining fruit in the beer, more of just an overall citrus flavor. Grapefruit? Orange? Lemon? All of them? I couldn’t nail it. It honestly reminded me of one of my own beers that fermented too warm and gave an off flavor. This is probably what they were going for, and it’s a wheat ale which leads me to believe they brewed and fermented as a wheat beer, but with ale yeast, so that would produce this effect. Putting personal style preferences aside, it was a pretty good wheat beer. Something just tasted off, and it didn’t sit right for me.
