Introducing Flight of Fancy, a new feature that takes a quick look at 4 beers I’ve recently enjoyed.
The Shed IPA – Otter Creek – IPA – 6.0% ABV
A beer that used to be a Stowe, VT exclusive, Otter Creek took over mountain favorite The Shed Brewery awhile back to keep them alive and I’m glad they did. This is an unfiltered, raw, earthy, east coast IPA, and an old favorite of mine after spending a year living in Vermont. I was excited to see this one hit shelves in NJ, pick it up if you want an change of pace IPA that’ll be different than everything coming out of San Diego.
Brooklyner Weisse – Brooklyn Brewery – Hefeweizen – 5.1% ABV
Had this one at a rather entertaining pig roast a couple weekends ago. This was during the great east coast heat wave of 2013 that saw temperatures near 100 for damn near a week, and this beer really hit the spot hanging around outdoors. Light and refreshing with quite a bit of banana, I really enjoyed this as a summertime easy drinker.
Pikeland Pils – Sly Fox – Pilsner – 4.9%
Another great beer for the summer, light bodied and smooth. I honestly got this for the first time just to see check out the awesome can they came up it, but I ended up really enjoying it. I switch between this one and Summer Love whenever I head to Citizens Bank Park. Very bready flavor, yet stays light.
Hop Crisis – 21st Amendment – Imperial IPA – 9.7%
Completely misjudged this one based on the packaging. Everything about the marketing of this beer screams dark, rich IPA, yet when I finally poured one out of the can it was a nice pale golden color. Yes, it’s an IPA, but the cans and box played mind games with me. It’s an oak-aged IIPA, and the woodsy notes from that come through just enough to notice them without overwhelming the west coast influence of this IPA.
Had any good beers lately?
I actually haven’t tried any of those yet, although hear good things. I just tried Yard’s Cape of Good Hope. Very good, but most of their stuff is.
Yea, pretty much everything out of Yards is solid, if unspectacular. I really need to get to that brewery, it’s so convenient I don’t know why I haven’t made it yet.
